Anyone Else Love Timber?

Tree Burls

Tree Burls

It may not be a surprise to you that I love timber.

I am a carpenter as well as a builder and cabinet maker, and I think timber is the best material ever I love the grain of the timber, the individuality of the colour of each plank, as well as the density of each type of timber.

Burls are the twisted knobbly parts of a tree, kinda like branches that don’t go anywhere. Anyway, those burls have the most interesting and unique patterns that I could look at for hours!

My family ask me, “What’s the difference between timber and wood?”

Well, in my opinion, wood is rubbish, good for burning. Timber is the stuff that can be used for making things.

Don’t you just love my spotted-gum flooring???

I also love recycled hardwood, often coming from the floorboards of really old houses, are so much heavier and denser than the softer, cheaper pine that is so common these days.

My absolute favourites? I can’t go past the spotted gum, and just love how my extra-wide spotted gum floorboards look in my lounge/kitchen area. (I also built the coffee table and the pot plant stand!)

For outdoors, I just love teak. It’s classy and timeless and always looks great.

Another timber that I think is absolutely awesome are Tasmanian Oak, for it’s beautiful lines and light colour.

My wife thinks I’ve got a bit too much timber in our house. She thinks the variety of timber colours clashes…

We opted for a tiled balcony so that we wouldn’t have too much timber and we bought a glass outdoor table instead of timber (although chairs and outdoor lounge are teak, naturally)! We thought it would save all the work that goes into maintaining it - the annual sand and seal etc.

BUT, I couldn’t help myself and built a massive deck around our above ground pool!

Then some timber stairs going up the street.

And a timber hand rail to match. So yeah, now we are back to being surrounded in timber again!

Only problem with it is all the staining and sealing of outdoor stuff and then resealing again every year.

Do YOU think I’ve got too much timber?

I love it so it’s totally worth it!
